Pit Bull Breed History And OriginDuring the 1900s, people were trying to breed a dog that would have the power of a bulldog and quickness and hunting instinct similar to a terrier, and that gave birth to the pit bull dog breed.Of course it wasn’t until late 19th century that the breed was known as “American Pit Bull Terriers” and had people established clubs for registering these dogs. Because of their characteristics, pit bulls were used primary to bait bulls and bears. After that was banned and labeled as inhuman, pit bull dog owners found a new purpose for their dogs which lead to creation of a new sport called rating, where dogs would take turns fighting rats in pits to see how many they could kill.During that time, such blood sports weren’t uncommon and were very popular with even the most respected members of the community. Dog fighting was socially acceptable and pit bulls were commonly involved in such activities.Over time the pit bull breed made their way into homes of many families looking for loyal and respectable dogs. Their friendly personality and playfulness made them very popular amongst families with kids which made them the most popular family dog at the time.Unfortunately the popularity of pit bulls had peaked around 1950′s, after the WWII, and other dog breeds started to gain more popularity replacing pit bull terriers as the popular family dogs.
More Recent Pit Bull History Even though the dog fighting matches were made illegal, it didn’t stop them from happening. People continued to have underground dog fighting matches and continued on breeding agile and at the same time powerful dogs in order to win. Pit bulls being the perfect fit due to their strength and prey driven instincts, were very prominent in such activities and often were chosen over dog breeds for those reasons. Breeding for such bloodthirsty events became very competitive since everyone wanted that perfect dog so that they could win the fight matches. Of course the breeders couldn’t keep all the dogs and ended up releasing the ones that weren’t as strong or couldn’t win a fight on the streets to fend for themselves. This is where the whole breed received a bad name for being aggressive. The poorly socialized pit bulls left on the street would just try to defend themselves to prevent the abuse that previous owners have caused them. So when they came in contact with other people they would often time show aggressive behavior and were labeled aggressive dogs even though they were just trying to defend themselves. After seeing so many pit bulls left to fend off for themselves, people started to look at the breed as poverty dogs. This is where all the negative labels started to stick to the once wonderful and popular pit bull dog breed. To prevent over population of pit bulls due to improper breeding caused by the illegal dog fighting community, many states started banning the pit bull breed in hopes to reduce strays. Of course that didn’t stop responsible pit bull dog owners from raising and training well socialized and well behaved dogs to live with them.
Modern Day Pit Bulls Today more and more people are inviting pit bulls into their homes and enjoying the great qualities that pit bulls have to offer. The underground illegal dog fighting community still exists and many countries, and several states in USA, still have a firm ban on this breed or any mix that has pit bull ancestors. If you love the pit bull dog breed and have enough room and time for a dog, you should consider adopting one for yourself. Through proper socializing and training you will have a loyal companion by your side and at the same time you will show others that pit bulls are just as family friendly as any other dog breeds out there.
